OVERVIEW OF THE FOOD PROCESSING & PACKAGING INDUSTRY IN INDIA

India is the world's second largest producer of food after China and has the potential of being the biggest, backed by its food and agricultural sector. The Indian food industry is poised for huge growth, increasing its contribution to world food trade every year. In India, the food sector has emerged as a high-growth and high-profit sector due to its immense potential for value addition, particularly within the food processing and packaging industry. The Indian food processing industry accounts for 32 per cent of the country's total food market, one of the largest industries in India and is ranked fifth in terms of production, consumption, export and expected growth. It contributes around 8.80 and 8.39 per cent of Gross Value Added (GVA) in Manufacturing and Agriculture respectively, 13 per cent of India's exports and six per cent of total industrial investment.

India is not just a big time producer and consumer of food, but also a vast and growing consumer base with a strong production, the food processing and packaging sector presents large and exciting business opportunity for both domestic and international players. But Despite its strong agricultural production base, a significant amount of food produce gets wasted in India due to inadequate infrastructure such as packaging facilities, storage, transportation, cold chain, and low levels of processing. According to the Ministry of Food Processing Industry (MoFPI), post-harvest losses account for US$1.5 billion (Rs 92,000 crores) annually.

Overall, less than 10 percent of the total food produced is processed into value added products in India. In comparison, the US and China process 65 percent and 23 percent of their produce, respectively. Similarly, other developing countries such as Brazil, Phillippines and Thailand process as high as 70, 78 and 30 percent of their produce, respectively.

With the advent of recent innovative technology, India’s food processing and packaging industry is surely positive and is deemed as a conspicuous sunrise sector. Abundant availability of raw materials, changing lifestyles, and relaxation in policies, provide sufficient platform for the industry's growth.

Food processing involves any type of value addition to agricultural or horticultural produce and the products that follow. The grading, processing and packaging of foods all fall under this umbrella. The Food Processing Industry sector in India is a global contender in terms of production, consumption, exports and growth prospects. The Economic Times - Food Processing and Packaging Summit 2018 will bring together players in the food processing and packaging industry to share the latest global innovations, trends and technologies in food processing and packaging industry to achieve global competitiveness and the opportunities to meet and speak to key businesses are boundless.

CHALLENGES

The key challenges identified overall for the food processing and packaging sector in India are as follows:

Poor supply chain linkages

India's agriculture market has a long and fragmented supply chain that results in high wastage and high costs, especially due to seasonality, perishability, and variability of produce

Infrastructure bottlenecks

The export related infrastructure for agri-produce is grossly inadequate, especially at sea ports and airports. More than 30 percent of the produce from the fields gets spoilt due to poor post-harvesting facilities and lack of adequate storage infrastructure.

Lack of skilled manpower

The agricultural workforce is inadequately skilled across different levels of food processing.

Low adherence to quality standards

India lacks basic standardization and certification infrastructure. Given the size of the food processing industry, there is a huge gap in the availability of laboratories, trained manpower, and certification agencies.

ACHIEVING & RETAINING THE GLOBAL COMPETITIVENESS OF INDIA'S FOOD PROCESSING AND PACKAGING SECTOR.

Over a period of two days, the summit will deliberate on the issues and challenges of food processing and packaging industry in India and focus on key trends, innovation and new technologies of processing and packaging of food. Through a series of interactive panel discussions, keynotes, case studies and un-conferencing sessions, the summit will provide you with insights into real projects, results and lessons to help you optimise your food processing and packaging operations to achieve the global competitiveness.

The summit will deliver strategic insights and key learnings on critical aspects within the food processing and packaging landscape, The intent is to bring together the experts to have a continued dialogue on a steady platform to discuss the latest trends and offerings which would help empower the overall development of food industry in India and the economy at large.
